Development Education - Advantages And Disadvantages
Nowadays, the entire lifestyle of people has changed from a couple of decades ago. Different aspects of life have undergone numerous changes and the education system is one such aspect. Definitely one of the biggest changes that have been introduced into the education system is that of developmental education. Developmental education is a very good concept as it includes the education of the individuals who are not very good at the basic skills such as reading, writing and math. The skills of these individuals are not up to the mark required to study in college. Although most of the colleges have this course, the only reason that it is not as popular is because these colleges prefer not to include this course in their brochures or on their websites. This article will put light on few of the advantages as well as disadvantages of developmental education.
The main advantage has to be that it is of great help to the students who have had to endure a gap between their school and college life due to a number of reasons. One of the main reasons of this is because they do not have sufficient funds. Another reason is that since they are independent they need to take up a job so as to save money for admission into college. The main function of developmental education is to ensure that the gap between those who are attending college and those who aren't fully equipped to attend college is reduced. There are a number of colleges who have an open door policy. Through this policy, the colleges ensure that any such student is brought up to the necessary standard required for studying in their college.
However it is unfortunate that this concept of developmental education is not just advantageous but also has its disadvantages. The main disadvantage being that with the popularity of these developmental education classes on the rise, more students are enrolling for these classes every year. Statistics have shown that nearly half of the freshmen that have secured admission into a college that have a two year course have enrolled for a developmental education class in their respective college.
There are a few students that take up a number of developmental education classes and thus need an entire semester to get through these classes. These classes thus don't allow the students to concentrate on the actual curriculum of the course which is a big disadvantage. Not clearing the regular exams lead to backlogs which will provide students as well as their families with an additional financial burden. Students should understand that these developmental education classes do not allow them to acquire any extra credit which will help them with their regular course.
Another major disadvantage of developmental education is there is a huge wastage of time involved. This time that is wasted is only wastage of money as they could be holding a job instead of taking up these developmental classes. Students that are attending these developmental education classes are also labelled out and this could lead to a child being stressed and could even lead to depression. Thus if you are taking up a developmental education course it is very important that you make sure that you pay equal attention to your regular studies as well.
